Richter is a magician. He manipulates paint into what looks like a photograph, including the soft-focus effect. The piece also subverts expectations. In a traditional portrait, you would see this girl’s face but instead, Richter depicts her turned away from the viewer. I don’t know exactly what Richter is trying to convey, but because it is a painting of his daughter, my interpretation is that he’s attempting to protect her while still paying respect through this beautiful representation.
